Tullamore Surface Water Drainage and Water Supply Scheme

Description of Project:

M&B Construction Ltd was the Main Contractor on this project and was appointed to the role of Project Supervisor Construction Stage. The contract included the construction of precast concrete sewers and PVC/HDPE/ Ductile Iron water mains and rising mains. Main pipework consisted of large diameter precast concrete pipes up to 1800mm in diameter. Other items of note on this project include the construction of twin 900mm precast concrete sewers and HDPE rising mains underneath the bed of the Grand Canal, construction of pipeline sections underneath the Dublin – Galway Railway Line and the damming, reconstruction and relining of a section of the Grand Canal to the specified requirements of Waterways Ireland.

The following is an overview of some of the works undertaken on the project:

  1. Construction of a new Surface Water Drainage network up to 1800mm diameter on the Rahan Road and adjoining areas in Tullamore.
  2. Damming, dewatering, fish removal and relining of the Grand Canal.
  3. Leaking section of Grand Canal was sealed using a HDPE membrane with subsequent application of puddle clay to the specifications of Waterways Ireland.
  4. Diversion of Grand Canal to facilitate construction works.
  5. Construction of twin 900mm precast concrete sewers, 750mm diameter concrete sewer, HDPE Rising Mains, 450mm diameter Ductile Iron Watermains and telecommunications ducting below the bed of the Grand Canal with substantial rock excavation.
  6. Construction of twin 900mm pipelines and rising mains underneath the Dublin – Galway Railway line.
  7. Continuous structural and vibration monitoring of structures including Railway Bridge and houses adjacent to the works areas. Substantial volumes of solid rock broken out and removed without damage to any structures.
